Time Writing Prompts: Reflect, Create, and Grow
Time is one of God’s most meaningful gifts. It’s something every one of us experiences, but none of us can hold in our hands. We watch it pass in the changing seasons, the growth of our children, and the busyness of our homeschool days. Time can feel fast when we’re laughing together or impossibly slow when we’re waiting on the Lord.
Now that my children are grown with families of their own, I look back and wonder where my time with them went. And I remember rolling my weary eyes when someone told me that these days would go by quickly. At the time, those moments were going fairly slow. But today, when I look back, I know they flew by. It’s all about perception.
Because people experience time differently at every age, it’s a rich subject for writing, imagination, and reflection. When we help our kids explore what time feels like, looks like, and means in their lives, we’re giving them space to understand their own stories — and to recognize God’s faithfulness in every moment.
That’s the heart behind these Time Writing Prompts. They’re gentle, creative, and designed to help kids express themselves while building real writing confidence. Whether your child is learning to write simple sentences or crafting thoughtful essays, prompts about time encourage them to slow down, notice, and reflect.
Why Use Writing Prompts About Time
Time is both simple and profound — and that makes it perfect for multi-age homeschool writing.
Here’s why writing prompts about time work so beautifully in a homeschool setting:
- Time connects to everyday life. Children can write from personal experience, memories, routines, and hopes for the future.
- Time invites creativity. Kids can imagine traveling in time, pausing it, reversing it, or even stepping outside of it.
- Time encourages reflection. These prompts naturally open the door for conversations about God’s timing, gratitude, waiting, and seasons of life.
- Time is developmentally flexible. Younger children can describe simple moments, while older students can explore deeper concepts like change, growth, and eternity.
When kids write about time, they learn to appreciate the moments that shape them — and to see God’s hand in the smallest details of their lives.
Examples of Time Writing Prompts
Here are three sample prompts, similar to those you’ll find in the daily emails:
- Imagine you found an old photograph from long before you were born. Write the story of what was happening in that moment of time.
- Describe a small, ordinary moment from today as if it were the most important minute of your life.
- If time could send you a message about your future, what do you think it would say — and why?
A Bonus Teacher/Parent Guide
So many have asked about adapting prompts, I’ve created a guide and include it in what I offer. The Time Writing Prompts include this guide!
1. Imagine you found an old photograph.
Teaching Note: Encourages imagination, storytelling, and connecting past generations to the present.
- K–5: Have them describe who is in the picture and what they think is happening. Keep it simple and creative.
- 6–8: Encourage details about setting, clothing, and emotions to build a fuller scene.
- 9–12: Invite them to explore family heritage, legacy, or how God weaves stories together across generations.
2. Describe a small, ordinary moment from today.
Teaching Note: Builds observation skills, gratitude, and mindful awareness of God’s presence in everyday moments.
- K–5: Let them pick a simple moment — playing, eating, reading — and describe what happened.
- 6–8: Encourage them to add sensory details and explain why the moment felt meaningful.
- 9–12: Invite reflection on how ordinary moments shape character, faith, and relationships.
3. If time could send you a message.
Teaching Note: Encourages abstract thinking, reflection, and considering God’s guidance for their life.
- K–5: Let them imagine a simple, encouraging message (“Keep growing!” “Don’t rush!”).
- 6–8: Have them consider hopes, goals, or lessons they might learn in the future.
- 9–12: Invite deeper reflection on trusting God’s timing, future callings, and spiritual growth.
