G is for Gifts: Seeing Your Children as Blessings in Homeschooling

When my first child—a precious gift from God—came into the world, homeschooling wasn’t even on my radar. But as more gifts were added to our family, I began to see that homeschooling could be a way to treasure these blessings while teaching them at home. My oldest was only four, and the thought of sending him away each day after he turned five went against every fiber in my being.

I had taught him to walk, to talk, to tie his shoes, to name colors and shapes and animals. How could I not also be the one to guide him into reading, writing, and arithmetic? I longed to keep nurturing his natural curiosity and to see his eyes light up when he discovered something new.

That’s when I began to see homeschooling not just as an educational option, but as a way to treasure the gifts God had given me.

Gifts From God: Seeing Your Children as Blessings

Scripture reminds us:

“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Psalm 127:3

Our children are not inconveniences to be sent away. They are treasures. Gifts. Blessings. Homeschooling gives us the chance to nurture these blessings daily.

That’s why it saddens me to see how often our culture treats children like burdens. Commercials, memes, and even casual conversations sometimes celebrate the moment school begins again—moms cheering as the bus drives away, or parents sighing with relief that their “freedom” has returned.

But friend, what message does that send to the hearts of our children? That we’re happiest when they’re gone? That their presence is draining instead of delightful?

Homeschooling gives us a different perspective. It allows us to embrace our children as the gifts they are, even on the hard days. Parenting is never easy, and homeschooling adds another layer of challenge—but it’s also one of the most rewarding ways to cherish the blessings God has entrusted to us.

Each Child Has Unique Gifts to Nurture Through Homeschooling

Not only are our children gifts themselves, but each one comes with unique talents, strengths, and callings. God has designed every child with purpose. Our role as homeschooling moms is to discover, nurture, and encourage those gifts so they can be used for His glory.

Some examples:

  • The Athlete: Sports practices and games can shape their schedule. Homeschooling gives the flexibility to balance academics and athletics.
  • The Artist: Encourage their creativity with art lessons, museums, or simply providing plenty of materials for them to explore.
  • The Scientist: Budding astronomers might do evening science lessons to study the stars. Future engineers may thrive with hands-on projects.
  • The Writer: Word-loving children can enter essay contests, write stories, or start their own blogs.
  • The Chef: A child with culinary gifts can use their skills to bless others through church events, charity fundraisers, or family meals.

In homeschooling, you’re not bound by a rigid schedule or one-size-fits-all program. You have the freedom to adapt your child’s education to their unique talents.

You Are Uniquely Gifted to Teach Your Children

Here’s the truth: not only are your children gifts with unique talents, but you are gifted too. God placed your children in your home, under your care, because He knew you were the right mom for them.

There may be days you question this. (I know I did!) On those rough mornings when lessons stall, tempers flare, or energy runs low, it’s tempting to wonder if God made a mistake. But He didn’t.

Even now, when I catch myself in that mindset, I remind myself: my role as a homeschooling mom was not an accident. God equipped me with the exact patience, creativity, and perseverance I needed—or at least, He grew those qualities in me as I walked the journey.

Homeschooling isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being faithful to the calling God has given.

Final Encouragement

Homeschooling is a daily act of gratitude—an acknowledgment that children are precious gifts, entrusted to us for a season. Each lesson, each moment together, is an opportunity to nurture their hearts, shape their character, and point them back to the Giver of all good gifts.

So, I’ll leave you with a few questions to ponder:

  • Are you seeing your children as blessings from God?
  • Do you recognize the unique talents God has woven into them?
  • And do you believe God has also given you the gifts you need to teach them well?

Take a moment to pray today, thanking God for your blessings and asking Him to help you steward them wisely.

Because friend—your children are gifts, and homeschooling is one of the best ways to steward those blessings.
